Weaving with Ancient Designs
I have recently completed a degree in Archaeology and written a dissertation on the differences between Anglo Saxon and Viking influences on weaving in Britain during the 5th to 10th centuries. As a result, I’m looking at my own weaving very differently. In fact, it’s exciting to go even further back in time to see the complex weaving designs found in Celtic sites of the European Iron Age, which date back to the 9th century BCE. I am intruiged by the idea of re-creating these colourful patterns on a modern loom, and exploring the ancient techniques of tablet weaving and sprang as well. (Sprang is a type of Viking weaving which looks a bit like netting).
This site will document my project: to weave modern textiles inspired by these ancient designs.
